when i heard gagan was getting married this year… i felt old!! gagan’s oldest sister is my college bff – my sakhi – and he was only 14 when i met him and the rest of their family in the good old days. and here he is now, all grown up and engaged to this glowing, smart young woman. vanu is amazing, and it was a delight to see how happy these two are together. the wedding will be in virginia, where vanu’s family lives, but we met up in gagan’s (and my) hometown of raleigh, nc, to take some engagement photos – we started off at the north carolina museum of art and then moved on to j.c. raulston arboretum on a beautiful summer afternoon. stay tuned for the wedding later this summer! vanu – so happy to meet you :) all my love to the bindras – can’t wait to celebrate with you all!!
when hareem first contacted me about her wedding, we soon realized we had already met each other… at sunday school, where she was my son’s new teacher for the year :) and the lucky young man she was engaged to happened to be a friend of my husband’s who also volunteers at the same mosque. so it’s been, alhamdulillah, such a blessing to see these two, who have given so much of their time and talents to the community, come together and bring two incredible families together as well. hareem and omar, i know it’s been a time of both grief and joy for you guys this year, and it was an honor for me to be a part of your wedding, and to learn lessons about faith, patience and love from your families. usman and i – and musa too :) – wish you both all the best in your new life together!
here i’ve shared a selection of photos from the nikah, or vows ceremony, held at hareem’s house, and the beautiful shaadi (reception/rukhsathi) at the sheraton tyson’s premiere, after which we took some portraits over by the wheel at national harbor. for both events, the decor was done by the incredible sarah khan event styling.
a week ahead of the cherry blossoms, and on a rainy day in a city clogged with traffic, it seemed like it would be hard to get the photos we wanted on the day of nadiaa and nasir’s nikah (islamic wedding vows). nadiaa was so incredibly patient working with me to schedule this session months ahead, knowing my schedule was tight on a school day. but honestly… when you have two beautiful people wanting to share even just an hour of the most important day of their lives with you… nothing can really ruin those photos :) we started with a first look in front of the eisenhower executive office building, where nadiaa used to work when she first interned in DC, and then moved on to the tidal basin, with its silvery reflections of the monument skyline. thanks again, both of you, for the honor of your choosing to work with me, and for fitting me in before your nikah on that blessed friday!
it was my pleasure to be a part of rabia and azim’s two-day wedding in virginia in the early fall last year. azim’s brother is actually a good friend of my husband’s and an old college acquaintance of mine, so it was very nice to meet the whole family and truly an honor to be the one to photograph the wedding. below i’ve shared some images from the pre-wedding mehndi event, held at diya restaurant in vienna, where games with the family, music by jatin anand from dc vibez and mehndi for the guests by deepti khona from henna harmony helped everyone celebrate the upcoming wedding.
after the mehndi i’ve shared some highlights from the wedding itself, which took place at the lovely cherry blossom banquet hall in sterling, va, with gorgeous floral arrangements by america’s beautiful florist matching rabia’s white, blue and pink outfit. rabia’s hair and makeup were done by the amazing sanober azam. after the wedding, we stopped by a nearby park for portraits in some gorgeous afternoon light, and then finished up with rabia’s first-ever taste of taco bell – a wedding promise from her new husband :)
i also want to give a shout out to jerold santa cruz for coming out to sterling to help me with this wedding! thank you for your beautiful photos and professional work :) and thank you once again to both of you, rabia and azim, for allowing me to be a part of your wedding!
